Apple plans to start using US-made chips from 2024
Apple plans to use chips made in the United States from 2024. A new factory will be built in the state of Arizona to do so, top executive Tim Cook has said, according to news agency Bloomberg.
Currently, by far the majority of chips for iPhones and MacBooks come from Asia. For example, 60 per cent of the processors needed now come from Taiwan. That is where TSMC, Apple’s main chip supplier, is based.
Apple wants to become less dependent on manufacturing in Asia. “It doesn’t matter what you think. If 60 per cent comes from a specific place, you probably don’t have a strategic position,” Cook said during a visit to Germany.
This is likely to involve a TSMC plant being built in the US city of Phoenix. Apple would also consider building another large factory for billions of dollars, reports The Wall Street Journal.
The US government is offering subsidies for more chip production at home to reduce dependence on Asian countries.
